“[I am seeking] a theological vision of Science that is not a Meta-physics, but a Theo-physics … It is not a matter of a Physics “of God”, but rather of the “God of the Physical; of God the creator of the world … not the world as autonomous being, independent and disconnected from God, but rather ontonomically connected with Him” (Epílogo de Ontonomía de la ciencia).
Theophysics is a vision of “Science as theology”, a conception of physics as the science of the world and the science of God. Panikkar’s intent is “to auscultate God in the scientific experience itself and to recognize Him in the most abstract mathematical speculation” (“Introduzione alla teofisica”, Civiltà delle Macchine, Roma 5, 1963). He seeks to show God as being “neither purely immanent, nor only transcendent, but the true God, who is also the God of science”. Theophysics was an early reflection that ended up being central to Panikkar’s effort to harmonize the God-World relationship which would later be called the cosmotheandric vision of reality.
