PHILOSOPHICAL AND THEOLOGICAL THOUGHT

With the title Philosophical and Theological Thought, Raimon Panikkar does not mean to endorse the modern dichotomy between philosophy and theology, but to transcend it. Contemporary theology cannot escape the conjectures of modern criticism and, when it becomes critical, it must necessarily approach theological reflection. Although “faith” is suprarational, it is the human intellect that welcomes, manipulates, and interprets it. In other words, the critique of theological reason is unavoidable and imperative. And this critique can only be philosophical. Contemporary philosophy, after the traumas of the two world wars, cannot be content with merely linguistic analyses and finds itself confronting existential problems that belong entirely to the realm of theological interests. The ultimate problems of humanity, whether individual, political, or ecological, require urgent solutions, and it is incorrect to exclude answers or questions because they do not belong to our sphere of specialization. As Panikkar himself states in the Introduction, “Philosophy is as much the wisdom of love as the love of wisdom. And true love is not only spontaneous but also ecstatic, that is, non-reflective. One is a philosopher as one is in love: it simply happens.” This volume bears witness to the author’s lifelong quest for love, as evidenced by the numerous writings reproduced here, spanning more than half a century.
