Raimundo Panikkar’s new book treats one of the central problems of today:
1. Can Secular Man really need to worship? Does he perhaps already worship?
2. Can worshipping Christian man find any sort of an authentic place in a purely secular society?
Spanning several cultures and calling on a great range of experience, eastern and western, Panikkar makes out a carefully and deeply argued case for saying yes to these questions. Worship, he says, is essential to prevent secular man from becoming inhuman: Secularisation is essential to save Christian man’s worship from becoming meaningless. He calls the whole book a study towards an integral anthropology. After lengthy methodical considerations, and the working out of norms, Panikkar moves towards the complementarity of the two concepts which is at the heart of the book.
Professor Panikkar continues to divide his time between India and America, where he has now moved to the University of California having previously been at Harvard
